The Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center: A Community Staple

Celebrating 50 Years of Inclusion in the Outdoors

For 50 years, the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center (BOEC) has been a cornerstone of the Breckenridge community, expanding access to outdoor adventure for people of all abilities.

Founded right here in Breckenridge in 1976, BOEC grew from a simple but powerful belief: everyone should have the opportunity to experience the outdoors that make this town so special. At a time when adaptive recreation was still largely unknown, BOEC began creating new ways for people with disabilities to explore the outdoors.

Over the decades, the early work helped establish Breckenridge as a mountain town where outdoor access is a shared community value. What started as a small, locally rooted program has become a nationally recognized leader in adaptive outdoor recreation, while remaining deeply connected to the town and mountains where it began.

Adaptive Outdoor Programs in Breckenridge

BOEC adaptive outdoor programs have evolved alongside the growing demand for inclusive recreation in the mountains. Over the last 50 years, BOEC  has expanded its programs, equipment, and instructional expertise to meet that need. Each year, more than 2,100 unique participants take part in adaptive skiing, snowboarding, rafting, rock climbing, cycling, camping, mountain biking, and wilderness courses. These adaptive programs support individuals with physical, cognitive, sensory, and behavioral disabilities, as well as veterans and other underserved communities.

As participation has grown, so has the community supporting this work. Thanks to strong local partnerships, BOEC has continued to increase capacity. For example, for over 15 years, Breckenridge Grand Vacations has been collaborating with BOEC to help strengthen adaptive recreation access across the county. That partnership continues to grow with Breckenridge Grand Vacations’ new Imperial Hotel & Private Residences, where dedicated space will allow BOEC to expand programming to another location on Breckenridge Mountain.

In addition, BOEC’s impact now extends well beyond Breckenridge. From adaptive ski and snowboard programs throughout Summit County to summer wilderness experiences across Colorado and Utah, BOEC reflects the values that define the Breckenridge community, a shared passion for the outdoors, and a belief that access brings people together.

Connecting Locals and Visitors Alike in Breckenridge

In a small town like Breckenridge, connections are often built quickly and extend far beyond town limits, and BOEC is part of that thread. People arrive from all over to ski, ride, volunteer, or work with BOEC, and many leave with lasting ties to the community.

Those ties take many forms. Some people join the BOEC community as adaptive instructors, others volunteer for a day, a season, or longer, finding that working alongside BOEC staff and athletes offers a meaningful way to give back while experiencing the mountain in a new way. Many choose to support the organization through donations or by participating in community events.

BOEC’s professional internship program also draws emerging outdoor professionals to Breckenridge each season, helping train the next generation of leaders in adaptive recreation while deepening their connection to the town.

Whether someone spends a single day on the mountain or an entire season in Breckenridge, BOEC is often what connects them back to this place long after they’ve gone. Together, these relationships create a wide-reaching network of people who carry Breckenridge with them wherever they go.

Celebrate 50 Years with the BOEC Community

As BOEC approaches its 50th anniversary, the milestone offers an opportunity to engage with a community that has shaped Breckenridge for five decades.

Throughout the anniversary year, BOEC will host events that celebrate the people at the heart of the organization: participants, instructors, interns, volunteers, and partners who believe outdoor adventure should be accessible to all.

Whether you’re a longtime local or visiting Breckenridge for the first time, the 50th anniversary is a chance to step into the community, experience adaptive recreation firsthand, and be part of what comes next.
