Friends of the Dillon Ranger District

Friends of the Dillon Ranger District (FDRD) is the local Friends Group for the US Forest Service here in Summit County. They work closely with USFS to provide ways for the public to give back to our public lands through trail maintenance and forest health projects. As a federal agency, the Forest Service is always in need of extra hands to make sure that our trails, forests, and public lands stay pristine!

Trail maintenance days are a fun, hands-on ways to help maintain and improve your favorite trails around Summit County. They can include traditional maintenance like improving trail tread (what you walk on), managing drainage (making sure that the trails aren’t too muddy and full of puddles), keeping the trees and bushes from creeping into the trail too far by responsibly cutting them back, and building or maintaining structures that make our trails usable (bridges, turnpikes, buck and rail fencing, etc.), while forest health projects help keep our forest clean and natural and can include wildlife surveys (boreal toads!), trash and pet waste cleanups, biodiversity surveys, campsite reclamation projects, and more!

FDRD also organizes a TON of outdoor and environmental education events. These are a great way to get outside and learn about our natural world and the role we play in it. They can include educational hikes to learn about wildlife, wildflowers, pollinators, birds, watershed health, animal tracks, the night sky, natural history, and much more. While these are not volunteer opportunities, you’ll learn about why Summit County is one of the best places in the country to get outside and experience nature. The more you know, the more you’ll appreciate and care for our public lands!

Summer Program Highlights

FDRD hosts events all year long to connect locals and visitors with our local forest. Check out a few of their events this summer!

Tails on Trails: Bring your furry friend for organized dog hikes with a licensed dog trainer to get dogs outdoors and get some tips on their behavior and how to walk together effectively! The trainer will guide us on dog behavior, dog-on-trail etiquette, and how dogs fit into our ecosystem.

Social Hikes: Throughout the summer, FDRD will host group hikes to enjoy our trails together! Social hike opportunities include Hike with a Ranger, Hike with Pride, Members Only hikes, and more! Visit the Event Calendar to find a hike!

Volunteer Opportunities: Want to give back? Join FDRD for a volunteer project! Check out their trail maintenance and forest stewardship projects to be a steward to our trail systems!

National Trails Day

Join FDRD on Saturday, June 6 to kick off the summer season on National Trails Day!

This is FDRD’s first official trail work day of the season, and typically has one of its highest turnouts of the year. We’ll be working on the Tenderfoot Mountain Trail, one of the hidden gems of the trail system in Summit. This will be a traditional trail work day where you can get your hands dirty, digging in the dirt, improving this well-loved trail for all the residents and visitors to our area. Afterwards, we’ll be having a happy hour and summer kick-off event  (details to come – keep an eye on our calendar) to celebrate another summer of stewarding our public lands.

Upcoming Events

This summer, they’ll also be having a ‘Skill Series’ as part of their Education Events, where attendees and participants can learn things from trail-side mountain bike repair to backpacking basics, and more! Once again, stay tuned to our calendars as these events are posted.

Throughout the summer, we’ll have several fundraising events as well, which is a great way to support our public lands outside of working on our trails and in our forests. They’ll be posted on our calendars as well and include volunteer opportunities at: Bacon and Bourbon Festival in Keystone, Fall Fest in Frisco, Mountain Music Mondays at the Dillon Amphitheater (no need to volunteer, but from every beer sold, a donation will be made to FDRD), and NEW this year, the Rockies Ramble, a fundraising mountain bike race at the Frisco Peninsula.
