There is hardly a better sight than the Rocky Mountains illuminated by the golden glow of changing aspen trees in the fall. Though most of the country is still experiencing hot heat, mid-August in Breckenridge gets cooler temperatures, a quite mountain town, and of course plenty of drives that allow you to experience the beauty of fall.

Boreas Pass – 21 miles
When autumn arrives in Breckenridge, few experiences rival a drive along Boreas Pass Road. The historic route meanders through towering aspen groves painted in brilliant shades of gold before ascending to the Continental Divide. Along the way, you’ll discover breathtaking mountain vistas, crisp alpine air and some of the region’s most memorable fall scenery.
Because the road is unpaved, a high-clearance vehicle is recommended. Access the route by following Highway 9 through Breckenridge and turning onto Boreas Pass Road.
Swan Mountain Road – 5 miles
For a scenic drive between Breckenridge and Keystone, follow Swan Mountain Road along the shores of Lake Dillon. Especially beautiful in the fall, the route is framed by golden aspens and offers sweeping views of the surrounding mountains.
Don’t miss Sapphire Point, a favorite local overlook located at the summit of the drive. Just a short walk from the parking area, this scenic viewpoint rewards visitors with breathtaking vistas of Lake Dillon, Frisco and the Tenmile Range.

Hoosier Pass – 11 miles
At 11,542 feet, Hoosier Pass offers one of the highest and most scenic vantage points near Breckenridge for taking in Colorado’s fall colors. Straddling the Continental Divide between Breckenridge and Fairplay, the mountain pass rewards visitors with sweeping views of golden aspen groves, rugged peaks and expansive alpine landscapes.
To reach Hoosier Pass, follow Highway 9 south through Blue River and continue toward the summit.
The Dillon Dam Road – 3.5 miles
Though relatively short, the Dillon Dam Road delivers some of Summit County’s most picturesque fall scenery. Tracing the northern shore of Lake Dillon, the drive is lined with brilliant aspen groves and showcases stunning views of the water, surrounding mountains and vibrant autumn colors.
Accessible from both Frisco and Dillon, this scenic route offers plenty of opportunities to stop, soak in the views and capture a few memorable photos.
Independence Pass – 31 miles
Just 90 minutes from Breckenridge, Independence Pass showcases some of Colorado’s most iconic fall scenery. As the route climbs through the San Isabel National Forest, visitors are treated to endless stretches of golden aspens, dramatic mountain vistas and unforgettable views of the surrounding peaks.
At 12,095 feet, Independence Pass is one of the highest paved mountain passes in the state. The winding roadway narrows in sections, so drivers should proceed with caution as they make their way toward the charming mountain town of Aspen.
