Sustainability Tips From the High Country Conservation Team

November 11, 2022 / Jess Hoover with HC3

Have you ever visited Breckenridge and questioned how to recycle? Or wondered what it would be like to drive an electric vehicle in the mountains…during winter? The High Country Conservation Center (HC3) is here for you.

With a mission to promote practical solutions for waste reduction and resource conservation in our mountain community, HC3 is a non-profit resource for people who care about the sustainability of Summit County. Our programs help the community recycle and compost, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and conserve water. So, whether you’re a year-round local or a weekend visitor, let’s all care for the place we love to explore. Here are three tips for loving the environment when you’re in Breckenridge.

1. Recycle like a Pro

We get it–vacations are a time to relax and forget about life’s stressors. Fortunately, remembering to recycle and compost when you’re in Breckenridge is super easy. If you’re staying at a resort or hotel that offers recycling to guests, check out our local recycling guidelines. Keep in mind they might not be what you’re used to at home. And feel free to call HC3’s recycling hotline at (970)668–5703 if you get stumped. Need to use one of the community’s convenient recycling centers? Access is free and available 24/7.

What about your food scraps? We’re lucky to have a free food scrap composting program in Summit County. If the property you’re staying at doesn’t offer food scrap collection, give HC3 a call, and we’ll help you find a solution.

2. Ditch the Car…or Drive Electric

We’re a community that cares about doing its part to fight climate change. Transportation is one of the most significant sources of carbon pollution in Breckenridge and across the county. And that’s why one of the things we love most about Breckenridge is how walkable it is–yes, even in winter! The next time you visit, avoid the stress of driving on I-70 in the snow and take an airport shuttle to town instead. Because with free public transportation, great bike routes, and lots of free shuttle options offered by local hotels, breweries, and distilleries, there’s really no need to rent a car for your trip.

What about electric cars in the mountains? We love them! With plenty of charging around town, driving electric is a practical option for your trip. Not sure how they’ll perform in the mountains? Take it from the locals-these cars are champs.

3. Get Involved

You don’t have to live here to love it here! From peak-baggers and leaf-peepers to powder-hounds and star-gazers, HC3 serves over 10,000 residents and visitors each year. You could be one of them! Use our recycling hotline, attend one of our events, sign-up for our newsletter, or donate. We’re working to keep Summit County green, and it takes all of us to make that vision a reality.
