Free or Affordable Winter Activities in Breckenridge

Emmily Van Dorn / January 27, 2026

Snowsports can undoubtedly add up in price. We wanted to provide you with some alternatives so you can give your feet, and your wallet a break. Here are just a few of the free or low-cost activities in Breckenridge and the surrounding area.

Gondola Scenic Ride

As you venture into town for the first time, you’ll undoubtedly see the gondola stretching over Park Avenue. For those skiing, this might be your best mode of transportation to and from the resort. However, you don’t need a ski pass to hop on the gondola; it’s free to ride and has some great views of the resort! There are four stops along the ride: Beginning at the north end of town, your first stop is the Shock Hill neighborhood, to the base of Peak 7, and finally, the base of Peak 8. The entire loop will take roughly 30 minutes. Keep an eye out for a family of moose as you pass over Cucumber Gulch Wildlife Preserve.

Free Museums

Our quaint little town is rich in history! From the 1800s gold rush to the 10th mountain division battalion and, finally, the growth of our beloved ski resort we know today, there’s a plethora of knowledge to be found. You can check out these museums and mines, and even tag along on a variety of tours! Below are just a few places to start.

Sledding

  • Carter Park: Located on the south end of town at 300 South High Street, is a local park accessible to the public! Be sure to bring your own sled and pick up after yourselves! Bathrooms are accessible and open to the public.
  • Runway Sledding Hill: Located at 1730 Airport Road towards the North end of town is a manmade hill established and groomed by the Town of Breckenridge. Free parking is available at Airport lot, and one port-o-potty is located in the parking lot, behind the hill.

It’s important to note sleds are not available for rent and can be purchased at City Market, Breckenridge Market, or possibly a thrift store. Both locations have a “sled shed,” so you could potentially find some there! Neither of these locations have dining or concession. It’s also worth noting neither of these locations are lit after dark, and a noise ordinance will go into effect at 10:00 p.m. For questions regarding Carter Park or Runway Sledding Hill, please call Breckenridge Recreation Center at 970-453-1734, Monday-Friday 5:30 am-8:30 pm.
