There is hardly a better sight than the Rocky Mountains glowing with a aura of the aspen trees changing in the fall. Though most of the country is still experiencing hot heat, mid-August in Breckenridge gets cooler temperatures, a quite mountain town, and of course plenty of drives that allow you to experience the beauty of fall.
Boreas Pass – 21 miles *connect Boreas Pass to Hoosier Pass for a longer Adventure!

Boreas Pass is one of the best drives in Breckenridge to experience the changing Aspen trees in Breckenridge. This gravel road twists through aspen groves that takes you up to the continental divide above tree line for a promising view. Make sure to bring an off – road car, this dirt road is not ideal for cars. Take Highway 9 through Breckenridge and then turn left on Boreas Pass road.
Hoosier Pass – 16 miles

Sitting at 11,542 feet elevation this drive offers a great fall drive to experience changing leaves. This high mountain pass sits on the continental Divide that winds from Breckenridge to Fair play. Take Highway 9 from Breckenridge through Blue River and onto Hoosier Pass.
Swan Mountain Road – 10 miles * Loop route to the Dillon Dam Road for a longer adventure!
This paved road connects Keystone to Breckenridge as an alternate route to 1-70 and the Dam road. Swan Mountain follows Lake Dillon and is surrounded by forestry and aspens. Pull off in the Parking lot at the top, and walk to the Sapphire point to take in a decadent bird’s eye view of Frisco and Breckenridge.
The Dam Road – 9 miles
The Dam road though short, becomes overcome with Aspens in the fall. This road follows Lake Dillon from Frisco to Dillon. Pull over at any spot to view the lake while taking in the colors of the fall. Access this road from either Frisco or Dillon.
Independence Pass – 32 miles (only open in the summer)

About an hour and a half from Breckenridge, Independence Pass is a great drive to see the aspens. This pass goes through the San Isabel National forest and is covered in Aspen groves. Climb to the top of the pass to reach an elevation of 12,095 feet. Be cautious, this road goes down to one road and spits out at the bottom of the town of Aspen.
Driving through the high country is always a beautiful scenery. If given the chance to experience the fall, it is a sight that is sure not to disappoint!
