Last summer was the first year of the Breckenridge Pro Rodeo and it was such a success that it is coming back for a 2nd year! The rodeo will offer 22 shows starting in June and going through September first in a specially constructed stadium on Airport Road on the north end of Breckenridge. All of the events will be at 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The Breckenridge Pro Rodeo offers an entertaining and exciting show that is perfect for the whole family. The rodeo features events and competitions including:
- Saddle Bronc – Saddled bucking horse riding. The rider must last 8 seconds
- Bareback Riding – Just like Saddle Bronc but bare back!
- Bull Riding – Yep. The real deal. Bull riding. The rider must last 8 seconds.
- Team Roping – 2 riders rope a steer together. The quickest time wins.
- Steer Wrestling – a horse-mounted rider chases a steer and then wrestles the steer to the ground.
- Tie-Down Roping – a cowboy from horseback ropes a calf and ties the calf as fast as possible.
- Barrel Racing – a horse and rider attempt to complete a clover-leaf pattern around preset barrels in the fastest time.
There are also 2 competitions that are especially for kids and any kid can sign up the day of the rodeo to participate. Mutton Busting is a time honored kid’s event where a child holds onto the back of a sheep for as long as they can while the sheep is running. Kids 70 lbs or less can sign up for Mutton Busting but with only 10 entries an evening get there early. Sign up will be located at the “Official Merchandise Booth” under the white tent. The other event is the Calf Scramble. Calves with prizes tied to the tail are let loose in arena and kids chase them around to get the prizes. It is truly fun event for kids of all ages.
Come early and enjoy a BBQ cowboy dinner which is available from 3:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Pro Rodeo clowns will be giving free “behind the chutes” tours at 4 p.m. and remember to sign your kids up for mutton busting and the calf scramble early if they want to participate.
