What’s New for the 2015/16 Summit County Ski Season

080-2011 Glade skiing by Carl ScofieldWith Summit County ski season opening days coming as early as mid-October it is time to start thinking about planning your winter ski season. It’s still pretty warm outside but with the return of football and the official start of fall we are starting to dream of powder days to come.

Although it is pretty quiet up in Breckenridge and Summit County, the work is just starting to heat up at Breckenridge, Keystone, Copper Mountain and Arapahoe Basin ski resorts. The ski resorts are hiring for the season, getting ready to crank up snowmaking, testing lifts and putting the finishing touches on new efforts.

With so many large projects being completed in recent past seasons, this summer has been a pretty quiet summer for major ski area upgrades. Of course each ski area has a few new projects to talk about. Here is a rundown of a few of the more notable upgrades at each Summit County Ski Resort.

With the Peak 6 expansion and multiple new and upgraded lifts, Breckenridge has been ground zero for improvement and expansion for the last five year. This year is a little quieter than that with the most notable improvement being new snowmaking capability on the lower sections of Peak 6. This will ensure a holiday opening for this terrain.

New in town is the recently completed Breckenridge Arts District. The Breckenridge Arts District was created by BreckCreate to support and promote arts, culture and creative experiences in and around Breckenridge. For more information visit www.breckcreate.org.

Kids Ski Free is Back! Back due to popular demand (almost 95,000 kids skied free so far), the Kids Ski Free Program works for kids twelve and under, and has no blackout dates this year. To qualify, children must stay two or more nights in one of Keystone’s numerous accommodation options.

Vail Resorts Announces Epic Mix Time

This new feature Vail Resorts is rolling out across all of their Colorado resorts is pretty cool. Called Epic Mix Time, this new feature will be a part of the wildly successful Epic Mix App and will give guests access to real-time, up-to-the-minute, lift line wait times across 55 of Vail’s Colorado core lifts and gondolas. This has awesome potential written all over it. Saving time and going to lifts without wait lines? Everybody wins!

Copper Mountain

Enhancements to Copper’s App Sherpa are the main story on what is new this season. Sherpa was rolled out last season as Copper’s stat tracking app. This year Copper has added trail recommendations. The app looks at data from a user’s previous skiing or riding patterns and recommends new terrain based on that user’s habits.

Coffee Drinkers Rejoice! Copper is offering a whole bunch of new dining options and menu items this year including a new Starbucks location. The new Starbucks will be located on the 1st floor of the Mountain Plaza building. This location’s proximity to the American Eagle lift and convenience of Center Village will make it a perfect place to rest between runs.

Another new dining option will be the moonlight dinners on the mountain. On three special evenings this season, guests can take the American Eagle lift to Solitude Station for a fine dining experience. After Dinner guests will ski/ride back down to Center Village for Cocktails.

Arapahoe Basin

Everybody is (and will be) still waiting to hear about the projected expansion of terrain into the Beavers. This 400 acre area is located north of the Pali Face and includes the Steep Gullies and other famous backcountry runs. The next step will be the Environmental Impact Statement which will be finalized in 2016.

The big improvement at A Basin this season is the renovation of the base area creating a plaza-like feel for guests with a $500,000 renovation of our Guest Services Center. The space was used for kids ski and ride lessons will now be an expanded season ticket office and phone center to handle incoming calls. This will help create a better experience for customers.
