Don’t Leave the Fun on the Hill: Breck’s Best Après

Modis Dining-105_ScofieldSome call it après, some call it happy hour, and others might even call it dinnertime. Whatever you call it, there’s something magical about shedding your gear, finding a warm cozy seat, and having some refreshments with family and friends after a snowy day on the hill. In America’s favorite ski town, there are a plethora of prime après ski spots scattered all over beautiful Breckenridge; so many, in fact, that it was difficult to narrow it down to just seven.

  1. Sevens

Located at the base of Peak 7 inside the Grand Lodge, this après ski spot couldn’t be more convenient. Ski right to the door and pop inside for a dollar off drafts, $5 well drinks and select wines for $6 from 3.p.m. to 5 p.m. This joint has some of the best views in town!

  1. T-Bar

This is probably Breck’s favorite place to après, thanks to its prime location, great food, friendly staff and fun DJ. Sit outside, soak up some sun and take in the views of Breck’s magnificent Peak 8. New this season, T-Bar is open for breakfast! Our favorite bartender is Lindsey; she makes the best drinks.

  1. Quandary

Conveniently situated right where Main Street meets the mountain, Quandary is a local favorite. Not only are their happy hour $7 apps and $3 drafts/ wines awesome, but we thoroughly enjoy playing corn hole outside with a view of the mountains, right in The Village.

  1. Kenosha

With one of the best decks in town and unrivaled horseshoe pits, it’s no wonder that Kenosha draws in visitors and locals alike for their happy hours and delicious steak! Their beer cheese and pretzel app is scrumptious.

  1. Blue Stag

Formerly known as The Whale’s Tail, this local favorite is a prime après spot, complete with a back deck to view the sunset on and a front deck with a fire pit, where you can play games of stump. Visit Pat during happy hour; his drinks are yummy! Peel and eat your own shrimp as well as really cheap wings are just a couple of our favorite après offerings at The Blue Stag.

  1. Napper Tandy’s

Napper Tandy’s is located above Salt Creek, right off Main Street. Nappers is always serving up the best drinks and appetizers, with happy hour from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. that features $2 and $3 drinks and apps. Warm up by the fireplace and on their second story deck while you view the mountain that you just conquered.

  1. Coppertop Bar

Known as one of Breck’s most amazing spots to après, The Coppertop Bar is located at Beaver Run, right at the base of Peak 9. Ski down and enjoy live music, daily specials and great views of the peaks.

Well, there you have it; Breck’s best après spots, complete with the insider scoop! All you need to do now is reserve your dates, pack your gear and come thirsty. The staff at BOB cannot wait to see you!!

Shake Up Your Winter Quiver

Quiver: A quiver refers to a skier or snowboarder’s collection of winter gear. A ski quiver can be anywhere from one to fifty or more pairs of skis or ski boots, depending on the individual’s point of view. We firmly believe in adding to your quiver instead of replacing pieces. Snow quality changes based on the day, and you’ll be happy when you have those heavy downhills to rip up the cord instead of chattering down the hill on your powder skis. However, growing your quiver doesn’t limit you to only acquiring more skis and boots. Creating a versatile quiver to ensure that you’re comfortable on the hill is the best thing you can do. Whether it be that Arc’teryx shell for when the wind is whipping, or that Armada puffy for when the temps drop below zero but there’s powder to shred, you’ll be thankful for your quiver. Do you, your significant other or children suffer from cold feet or hands? Well, continue reading to find out how to keep your digits warm this season.

The 2016-17 Breckenridge Ski Season has begun and once you see what’s out there, you’re bound to appreciate just how much the industry has picked up its game. That being said, it’s time to add these top five items to your quiver:

  1. HD Video and Camera Goggles: Are people calling you a tele tubby with that GoPro on top of your head? The “is it on?” questions can get a bit old. We realize there are plenty of options out there, but for the sleek look and price, we’ve found that the Zeal Optics HD Camera Goggle makes it happen. Capturing 1080p & 720p HD video, you won’t be disappointed with the quality. And, glove-ready buttons on the side of the frame make it easy to turn recording on or off without freezing your hands off.
  2. Hotronic FootWarm S4: We know the temperatures drop quickly here in high country. Keeping your feet and hands warm is pertinent to staying on the slopes all day. Yes, hand warmers and toe warmers are quick and easy to pick up, but they don’t last all day. If you want to get serious about keeping your feet toasty in your boots, check out the latest and greatest heated foot bed from Hotronics. You will probably benefit from a custom install, but coming from firsthand experience, it’s worth it. So, while everyone else is going inside to warm up, your cozy toesies can keep lapping that powder run.
  3. Skis or Snowboard: We firmly believe in ADDING to your quiver without removing old items. What type of ski or snowboard do you need? Powder? Rocker? All mountain? Carving? Well, if supporting local companies isn’t cool enough, you’re sure to get a cool top sheet that you probably won’t see much of. Handmade, small-batch ski and snowboard manufacturing businesses are flourishing, and these companies aren’t just making fat powder skis and boards. They adapt to all different types of conditions, just like bigger companies. Go ahead and demo a pair; you’ll be surprised at the difference it makes! Check out local ski shops like Rocky Mountain Underground (RMU)Fatypus or Icelantic. These small establishments offer competitive pricing and top of the line equipment.
  4. Touring Set Up: Face it, Breckenridge gets busy. If you’re lucky enough to be a local or get up here on the weekdays, you’re lucky enough. For all you weekend warriors, you might want to set aside some money to invest in some touring gear for next season. Now, we realize it isn’t as simple as it sounds. There is some substantial equipment you will need to purchase to make sure you stay safe. However, investing and expanding your knowledge about the backcountry only increases the places you get to see and can give you a different angle on how you look at snow conditions. As a beginner, we recommend you do your research. Evo.com has a great article on How to Get Started Backcounty Skiing and Snowboarding. This sport is becoming increasingly popular. If you do choose to come up and skin Breckenridge, start on Peak 8 or 9, and stay on designated skin paths. You can read all about the uphill access from the Ski Patrol, as well as sign up for email alerts here. The pro: Avoid lift lines while getting a workout and get the first tracks of the day. There is something very rewarding about skiing down an empty trail first thing in the morning on fresh corduroy. Since we know ski traffic is horrendous on Sunday, we suggest coming up Saturday and spend the day touring. Ski Sunday afternoon when the lines are less crowded, get a GREAT lodging rate Sunday night and drive home first thing Monday morning (you may even be able to get a skin in on Peak 7 if you stay at Grand Lodge’s Ski in Ski out Resort!)
  5. Bluetooth Wireless Helmet Audio: First off, if you aren’t wearing a helmet, get one. The benefits outweigh the drawbacks, plus it keeps your ears warm. The Chips, made by Outdoor Tech, allows you to make and take those phone calls when you lose your buddies on the first run (without fumbling to remove your mittens or retrieve your phone from your pocket). Each earpiece features a single button that you can operate from outside of your helmet. Buy. Connect. Don’t miss another call on the hill.

There you have it: the five most crucial items that you should be adding to your quiver. If you can’t make it happen this year, don’t worry. A better version will be out next year, when you’re ready to get back in the game. Have a safe and exciting ski and snowboard season in Breckenridge!
