Fly Fishing in Colorado – The perfect Spring Activity

Two people fishing in Breckenridge ColoradoSpring is here and the rivers and lakes in Colorado’s High Country are thawing. The weather is warming and the sun is shining. On of the most enjoyable activities to do in the upcoming shoulder season is fly fishing. Some of the most spectacular fly fishing in the United States can be found in the state of Colorado. Colorado has some of the best locations in the world to fish. One can spend hours immersed in the glory of the majestic rivers surrounded by some of the best scenery the world has to offer.

Fly fishing in Colorado is for all levels of experience. You can enjoy a full day on the river and explore a wider variety of waters in and around Summit County.  Start right in Breckenridge on the Blue River and then explore the surrounding counties. The upper Platte valley in Park County just south of Breckenridge allows is considered a fly fishing mecca. Consider hiring a local guide. There are several companies that offer guided fly fishing trips in Breckenridge. Full day trips are available on the Blue, Colorado, Williams Fork, Eagle, Arkansas, Middle Fork of the South Platte and South Fork of the South Platte. Guides really help because they know exactly where to go for the best fishing in the spring. Travel times to great fishing spots can vary from 30 minutes to one hour.

The Arkansas River is located in the southwestern portion of the state and provides some great trout fishing for anglers. The best time to fish the Arkansas for trout as is spring. Around May 15-30 or so every year, many fishermen descend on the Arkansas for the annual caddis hatch which is huge! Brown trout feed on caddis and they congregate for this hatch, making the experience truly memorable.

To the north fish the Colorado River which is located in the Rocky Mountain National Park. This is a river that is mostly wide and deep with a gently moving current. Cottonwood trees line the shore providing many hiding spaces for the brown trout that are abundant in this water.

The nationally recognized Frying Pan River is well-known as one of the best fly fishing rivers in the state. Located near Aspen it’s a beautiful river with easy access and is located just outside of Aspen. The Frying Pan is host to a variety of trout including rainbow, brown and cutthroat. There are year-round hatches making fly fishing in any season possible.

Another great river in the Aspen area is the Roaring Fork. This diverse river varies from small and calm to large and mighty in places. The river is classified as wild trout waters and is easily accessible down the Rio Grande Trail. Year-round fishing is available here and you’ll find mostly wild rainbow trout in the Fork with an occasional wild brook trout.

Come to Breckenridge this off season. It is the least expensive time to visit and it is quiet and free of the crowds that descend upon Breckenridge in the winter and over spring break. Make fly fishing the activity you enjoy this spring in Breckenridge.
